Xinhua News Agency, Shanghai, July 12 (Reporters Gu Tiancheng, Gong Wen) — At the inaugural China International Conference on Medical Equipment Cooperation held here on the 12th, it was revealed that in 2024, China's medical equipment exports have reached over 9,000 medical institutions across more than 190 countries and regions, establishing the country as a vital global market and production base for medical equipment.
"Medical equipment serves as a critical foundation for safeguarding the health and safety of people worldwide, and China's advancements in this field are now benefiting the globe," said Su Baoli, Deputy Director-General of the First Department of Equipment at the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology. She highlighted examples such as endoscopic surgical robots, which have obtained regulatory approvals for clinical use and been exported to 23 countries.
"The import and export trade volume of China's medical equipment has achieved a compound annual growth rate of 9.4% over the past five years, reflecting its rising international competitiveness and brand influence, as well as deepening global cooperation. This progress is attributed to China's commitment to high-level openness and accelerating the development of a 'dual-circulation' economic model," said Hou Yan, Chairperson of the China Association of Medical Equipment. She noted that the conference aims to establish a high-level, broad, and multidimensional platform for international exchange and cooperation, sharing China's innovative achievements and practical experiences in medical equipment.
In recent years, driven by technological revolutions and industrial transformation, the global medical equipment industry has flourished, becoming a key highlight of economic growth.
According to the industry green paper China Medical Equipment Development Status and Trends 2025, China's medical equipment sector has grown at an average annual rate of over 12% in the past decade, with its market size reaching 1.35 trillion yuan in 2024. China remains the world's second-largest single-country market and boasts the highest number of manufacturers, along with the most comprehensive range of product categories and varieties.
Zhang Xian, Deputy District Head of Shanghai's Minhang District, emphasized that factors such as advancements in artificial intelligence and the accelerating aging population have positioned the medical equipment industry at the forefront of "technological innovation and global collaboration." As a core hub for Shanghai's biopharmaceutical industry, Minhang District will adopt more open policies aligned with international standards, strengthen industrial chains to support collaborative projects, and leverage abundant scientific and technological resources to drive breakthroughs.
The conference attracted participants from 17 countries and regions, including officials from health departments, experts, and corporate representatives.
